Hair care in Belgaum: water, weather and routine

Belagavi sits at around 750 metres on the edge of the Western Ghats, and that elevation shapes everything. The monsoon arrives hard and stays, the air holds moisture for months, and winter nights get cool in a way most of Karnataka does not experience.

For hair this produces two distinct seasons that need different handling. A long humid stretch where frizz, tangling and a persistently damp scalp are the issues, and a cooler dry stretch where the problem reverses into dryness and flaking.

Water supply varies across the city. Areas relying on borewells generally see harder water than those on treated municipal supply, and hardness has a direct effect on how hair behaves after washing.

This is the longest and most demanding part of the Belagavi year for hair. Humidity swells the hair shaft, lifts the cuticle and reverts styles toward their natural pattern, which is the mechanism behind frizz.

• Dry hair properly before tying it up. Damp hair tied for hours is the most common local mistake, and it leaves the scalp uncomfortable.
• Expect more tangling, and switch to a wide-tooth comb if you have not already. Detangle from the ends upward.
• Seal while damp. A light oil or leave-in on the mid-lengths and ends before hair dries slows how much atmospheric moisture gets in.
• Do not reduce washing because the air is humid. A damp unwashed scalp is worse, not better.
• Rinse after getting caught in rain rather than letting it dry in.

Belagavi winters are dry and cool enough to flip the problem. Dry air draws moisture from hair and scalp, and hotter showers compound it.

• Lower the water temperature. Hot showers in cold weather are the single biggest cause of a tight, flaky scalp.
• Pre-wash oiling suits this season particularly well, since a dry scalp genuinely benefits from a lubricating layer.
• Pay attention to the ends, which dry out first.
• Watch friction from scarves and caps at the hairline.

Hard water leaves calcium and magnesium deposits on hair and scalp with every wash. Over weeks this builds a film that dulls hair, makes shampoo lather less, and for some people irritates the scalp.

Signs worth recognising: shampoo that will not lather properly, hair that feels coated but looks flat, dullness that conditioner does not fix, and a faint persistent itch.
