Hyderabad summer hair care
A Hyderabad summer runs long enough that small daily habits compound. Most of the damage is avoidable and none of the fixes are expensive.
The hot shower trap
The most common and most easily fixed mistake. People wash more often in hot weather, and often out of habit with hot water. More frequent washing at higher temperature strips lipids from hair and scalp, and the dryness that follows gets blamed on the climate.
Lukewarm water used more often does far less harm than hot water used the same number of times. This costs nothing and is the highest-value change available.
Managing sweat
Sweat is salt and water. Left to dry repeatedly on the scalp, it leaves a residue that combines with sebum and dust, and that is often the direct cause of summer scalp itch.
- Rinse with plain water after heavy sweating. You do not need shampoo to remove sweat.
- Do not tie hair tightly over a sweat-damp scalp for hours.
- Change pillowcases more often in hot weather.
- Rinse rather than reaching for dry shampoo, which absorbs oil without removing anything and adds to buildup.
Sun on the parting
The line of an exposed parting is unprotected skin, and Hyderabad's midday sun is strong for months. UV also degrades the hair shaft itself, roughening the cuticle and fading colour.
- Cover up at midday: a scarf, cap, dupatta or umbrella.
- Change your parting from time to time so the same strip is not always exposed.
- A leave-in with UV protection is worth it if you are outdoors for long stretches.
- Oil on the ends before a long day out provides some physical shielding.
Protecting the ends
The ends are the oldest part of your hair and they take the worst of dry heat. Left alone through a long summer they split, and splits travel up the strand.
- Condition the mid-lengths and ends every single wash, without exception.
- Oil the ends before washing, even on days you skip the scalp.
- Detangle from the ends upward with a wide-tooth comb.
- Reduce heat styling through summer; the climate is already doing that work.
- Trim every few months rather than waiting until the ends look visibly bad.
Helmets and commutes
- Dry the helmet lining between uses. A damp lining on a damp scalp repeatedly is the actual problem.
- A thin cotton cap underneath, washed regularly, keeps sweat off the lining.
- Do not tie hair tightly under a helmet, which adds tension to friction.
- Rinse your scalp after long rides where you can.
Wear the helmet. Manage the scalp around it.
Questions
Related questions
How often should I wash my hair in Hyderabad summer?
Shampoo two or three times a week with lukewarm water, and rinse with plain water in between after heavy sweating. Frequency matters less than temperature.
How do I protect my scalp from the sun?
Cover your parting at midday with a scarf, cap or umbrella, and change your parting occasionally so the same strip of skin is not always exposed.
Why does my scalp itch in summer?
Usually sweat residue combining with sebum and dust. Rinsing with plain water after heavy sweating, rather than letting it dry on the scalp, resolves it for most people.
Is dry shampoo a good option in hot weather?
Use it sparingly. It absorbs oil without removing anything, so the starches and oil both stay on the scalp and add to buildup. A plain water rinse is better.
