Plant oils oxidise when exposed to heat, light and air. In a city with long hot summers, a bottle that has spent weeks in a sunlit display or near a shop window has had a harder life than the date on it suggests.

Oxidised oil smells sharp, or faintly like crayon or old paint. That smell is your most reliable test and it overrides the printed date. If it smells wrong, do not buy it, and do not use what you already have.

Ingredients are listed in descending order of quantity, so the first two or three are most of the bottle. A product named for a botanical that lists it tenth is mostly carrier oil with a trace of the headline ingredient.

Watch for paraffinum liquidum, liquid paraffin, mineral oil or white oil near the top. Mineral oil is not harmful and works perfectly well, but a supposedly traditional herbal preparation built on paraffin is not what it is being sold as.
