Belgaum water and your hair
If your hair changed after moving within Belagavi, or after a switch from municipal supply to a borewell, the water is the first thing to suspect.
What hard water actually is
Hardness is dissolved mineral content, principally calcium and magnesium picked up as groundwater moves through rock. It is not a contamination issue and it is not a health problem. It is a chemistry problem for anything you wash.
In Belagavi, as across much of North Karnataka, borewell-dependent areas generally see harder water than areas on treated supply. Hardness can vary between neighbourhoods and between seasons as the water table shifts.
What it does to hair
Two mechanisms. Mineral ions react with the surfactants in shampoo, forming an insoluble scum that neither cleans nor rinses away cleanly. And calcium and magnesium deposit directly on the hair surface, building up over repeated washes.
- Hair looks dull, because a rough mineral film scatters light instead of reflecting it.
- It feels coated, rough or straw-like, particularly at the ends.
- Shampoo lathers poorly, so people use more, which adds residue.
- Colour-treated hair fades faster and can shift tone.
- Some people get a persistent low-grade scalp itch.
- Conditioner seems to stop working.
How to tell
- Look for white crusty deposits around taps, on the shower head and in the kettle. That is the same mineral, and it is the clearest domestic sign.
- Fill a clear bottle a third with water, add a few drops of liquid soap, cap it and shake hard. Plenty of stable foam suggests soft water. Little foam with a cloudy, scummy look suggests hard.
- Note whether shampoo lathers noticeably worse than it did elsewhere.
- If you want a number, inexpensive hardness test strips are widely available.
What actually helps
Chelating shampoo
The most direct fix. Chelating agents bind metal ions and carry them away, which ordinary clarifying shampoo does less effectively. Used every week or two, not daily, since it is a strong cleanser.
A shower filter
Reduces mineral content at the point of use. Effectiveness varies by product and they need replacing, but for significant hardness it is the intervention people report most benefit from.
An acidic rinse
A dilute vinegar rinse, roughly one part vinegar to four parts water, helps dissolve surface deposits and encourages the cuticle to lie flatter. Rinse afterwards. Not for daily use.
Pre-wash oiling
Oil on the hair before washing gives the mineral-laden water something to sit on other than your cuticle. It is a partial measure rather than a solution, but it costs nothing extra if you already oil.
What does not help
- Washing more often with the same water. Every wash adds deposit.
- More conditioner on top of buildup, which adds to the film.
- Switching shampoo brands repeatedly. The water is the variable, not the brand.
- Assuming your hair has suddenly become damaged. Mineral buildup mimics damage and clears with the right wash.
Questions
Related questions
How do I know if my water is hard at home?
Look for white crusty deposits on taps and in the kettle, and try the soap shake test: little foam with a cloudy scum suggests hard water. Test strips are cheap if you want a figure.
Does hard water cause hair loss?
There is no good evidence it causes hair loss. It causes dullness, roughness and buildup, and the tangling that follows can increase breakage, which is a different problem from shedding.
What is the difference between clarifying and chelating shampoo?
Clarifying shampoo removes oil and product residue. Chelating shampoo additionally binds metal ions, which is what you need for mineral deposits from hard water.
Will a shower filter fix hard water hair problems?
It reduces mineral content at the point of use and many people notice a clear difference. Effectiveness varies by product and filters need replacing on schedule.
