Why hair looks dull, and what changes it

Each strand is wrapped in overlapping cuticle cells, arranged like roof tiles pointing from root to tip. When they lie flat, the surface is smooth and light reflects off it coherently. That coherent reflection is what we perceive as shine.

When those cells are lifted, chipped or missing, the surface is irregular. Light hitting it scatters in many directions, and the eye reads the result as dull. Nothing has been removed from the hair; the geometry has changed.

• Alkaline conditions. Hair prefers a mildly acidic environment; strongly alkaline products swell the shaft and lift the scale.
• Heat, particularly dry heat from straighteners and high-temperature dryers.
• Chemical processing: bleach, permanent colour, relaxers and perms all disrupt the cuticle by design.
• Mechanical friction from brushing, towel-rubbing and pillow contact.
• Humidity, which swells the shaft as it absorbs atmospheric water.
• Hard water minerals depositing on the surface.
• Simple age. The ends of long hair have endured years of all of the above.

• Cooler water for the final rinse. Not icy, just not hot.
• Mildly acidic products. This is the mechanism behind a diluted vinegar rinse, and it is genuinely effective for some people.
• Conditioner, which deposits ingredients that lie along the surface.
• A light oil on the mid-lengths and ends, which fills surface irregularities and reduces friction.
• Less heat, and lower heat when you use it.
• Blotting rather than rubbing when drying.
• Trimming, since no amount of smoothing rescues an end that has already frayed apart.

A common and frustrating loop: hair looks dull, so you add more product, which adds more film, which eventually accumulates into a layer that itself scatters light. Hair now looks duller, so you add more.

The signal is hair that feels coated but looks flat, and that does not improve however much you condition. A single clarifying wash usually breaks it, after which hair often looks dramatically better and people wrongly credit whatever they used next.

Calcium and magnesium in hard water deposit on the hair surface with every wash. Over time this creates a mineral film that both dulls hair and makes shampoo lather and rinse less effectively.

If you live somewhere with hard water and your hair went dull after moving, this is likely the cause rather than anything you changed. Fine hair has more cuticle surface per unit of volume and tends to look shinier. Coarse, very curly hair scatters light by its shape regardless of condition, and no routine changes that geometry. Neither is better; they simply reflect differently.

So the target is your hair at its smoothest, not somebody else's hair. Reducing damage, keeping buildup down and trimming the frayed ends gets almost everyone most of the available distance.
