Hair density and hair thickness are not the same thing

Density is how many hairs grow per square centimetre of scalp. Thickness, more precisely strand diameter, is how wide an individual hair is. You can have high density with fine strands, low density with coarse strands, or any combination.

Both contribute to how full your hair looks, but they respond differently. Density is essentially fixed by your follicle count, which you are born with. Strand diameter varies more, shifting with age, hormones and health.

A rough density check

Look at your parting in good light. If you can see a lot of scalp along a normal parting, density is on the lower side. Alternatively, gather your hair into a ponytail and feel its circumference. A slim ponytail with individually noticeable strands suggests lower density.

A rough thickness check

Take one strand and roll it between your fingers. If you can barely feel it, it is fine. If it feels like a thread you could clearly grip, it is coarse. Comparing a strand against a sewing thread is a common trick: thinner than the thread is fine, similar is medium, thicker is coarse.

• Density: essentially fixed. You cannot grow new follicles, so anything promising more hairs is overpromising.
• Strand diameter: partly genetic, but genuinely affected by age, hormones, nutrition and follicle health. It can decline, and where a specific cause is corrected it can partly recover.
• Apparent fullness: very changeable. This is where most real-world improvement comes from.

That last point is worth taking seriously rather than treating as a consolation prize. Most people who feel their hair has thinned are partly seeing genuine diameter change and partly seeing the effect of breakage, over-processing and handling. The second part is addressable.

• Reduce breakage. Hair of an even length looks considerably denser than hair with ends snapped off at random lengths. This is usually the largest single gain available.
• Keep heavy conditioner and oil off the roots. Weight at the root flattens hair against the scalp and makes density look lower than it is.
• Get a blunt cut rather than heavily tapered ends, which concentrates the visible volume at the perimeter.
• Avoid persistent tight styles at the hairline, which over years can cause real and sometimes permanent loss.
• Be realistic about parting. Moving a parting can change apparent density noticeably, and it costs nothing.

See a doctor if you notice a widening parting over months, thinning concentrated at the crown or temples, thinning accompanied by fatigue or other symptoms, or sudden diffuse shedding after illness, childbirth or significant weight loss.

Several causes of thinning are treatable, and some are far more treatable when caught early. Waiting a year to see if it resolves is a common and costly decision.
